1. The Mechanics of a Nile River Cruise
The Nile is famously the longest river on the planet, stretching over 4,100 miles! Because it uniquely flows from south to north, river cruise lines actually call traveling south heading "upriver." Standard luxury itineraries typically sail the scenic stretch between Luxor and Aswan. This specific route is a favorite for travelers because ships can dock right along the riverbank, letting you step straight off the boat into incredible open-air museums.
2. Big Ships vs. Boutique Sailing
If you want to bypass sailing all the way around Africa on a global ocean cruise, you will transit the massive, man-made Suez Canal, which opened in 1869 to connect the Mediterranean Sea directly to the Red Sea.
However, if you want a quiet, intimate experience away from the crowds, savvy travelers book a Dahabiya. These traditional, multi-sailed wooden passenger vessels have been used by royalty for centuries and usually feature only 4 to 10 cabins for total luxury.
3. Monolithic Marvels and Engineering Feats
The Great Pyramid of Giza: Built as a royal tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu over 4,500 years ago, this surviving member of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was the tallest man-made structure on earth for over 3,800 years!
The Great Sphinx: This massive limestone monument features a lion's body with a human head and was carved directly out of a single piece of limestone bedrock. It was repeatedly buried up to its neck in desert sand until it was fully excavated in the 1920s.
Abu Simbel: Built by the powerful Pharaoh Ramesses the Second to honor himself and Queen Nefertari, this complex features four giant statues carved into a cliff. In the 1960s, the entire complex had to be carefully dismantled and moved piece by piece to higher ground so it would not be flooded by the creation of Lake Nasser!4. Cats, Culture, and Pop Culture
Ancient Egyptians absolutely adored their pets. Cats were considered deeply sacred, a symbol of good luck, and protected by strict laws. In fact, families would mummify their pet cats so they could stay together in the afterlife!
We also touched on historical heritage and pop culture. While the fictional "City of the Dead" Hamunaptra from the 1999 movie The Mummy was completely made up by Hollywood, the movie was inspired by the real-world ancient city of Luxor. And for mystery lovers, Agatha Christie famously wrote portions of her classic novel Death on the Nile while staying at the historic Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, which overlooks the actual paddle-wheel cruise routes.
